The Rt. Hon. Brian Mulroney urged a “rethink” of Canada’s relationship with China in a recent Globe and Mail piece. Mr. Mulroney supported Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s rejection of exchanging two Canadians detained in China (former diplomat Michael Kovrig and businessman Michael Spevor) for Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou.

A resetting of Canada-China relations, Mr. Mulroney stated, would acknowledge that the hopes that China would become an effective partner in areas such as trade and international relations have not borne out. The Prime Minister also noted that such a reconsideration should be tied to the construction of 5G networks in Canada and the possibly detrimental consequences to Canada’s place in the Five Eyes intelligence alliance if Huawei gear is used in the networks.
